Mycopunk Red Upgrades: d
The red nodes players call "red upgrades" are the Oddity rarity tier: nine nodes with a red icon, an endgame-only drop pool and the steepest upgrade cost in the game. They are not a colour variant of Epic — they are a separate tier above Exotic, and the red tint is the game's own rarity colour (#ff3134).

What makes a node Oddity
Three things separate Oddity from Exotic:
| Property | Oddity |
|---|---|
| Nodes in the tier | 9 |
| Upgrade scrip cost | 800 |
| Rare resource cost | 200 |
| Cleanse cost (Ouroboros) | 280 |
| Craft-new Saxonite cost | 999 |
| Extra upgrade cost | 4 Saxonite |
| Rotation unlock | Player level 30 |
The 200 rare-resource cost is the highest of any tier, and the craft-new price of 999 Saxonite means you will not be rolling for a specific Oddity node by accident. These are drops you build around, not purchases.
All nine Oddity nodes
| Node | Effect |
|---|---|
| Boundary Incursion | Increases the size of your upgrade grid. |
| Cyclotron | Circular pattern node with a wide effect area. |
| DiscWorld | Disc-shaped pattern that covers a ring of cells. |
| I'll Take That | Takes the fans of a target for yourself. |
| Modular Construction | Hard-light constructs are made of harder hard-light. |
| Office Birthday | Grass painting as a birthday activity; grid-size-adjacent utility. |
| Return to Receiver | Magnetism runs both ways: pulls what you threw back. |
| Switcheroo | Swaps your position or state with the target. |
| Upside Down | Inverts gravity for a short window. |
Half of the pool is grid manipulation rather than damage: Boundary Incursion and Edge Fault both increase grid size, and the disc-and-ring patterns (Cyclotron, DiscWorld) exist to fill space that ordinary shapes cannot. That is the design intent of the tier — Oddity nodes solve geometry problems that no amount of Rare nodes can solve.
Where Oddity nodes come from
- Weapon level 32 rewards (the last reward in most weapon tables is an Oddity or an unnamed upgrade ID)
- Amalgamation, the weekly boss, which guarantees one Exotic and can roll higher
- Ouroboros runs, where most upgrades can stack and higher rarities appear in the pool
- Crafting, at the 999 Saxonite price for a new roll
The level 32 path is the reliable one. It is also why Oddity nodes are rare in the first hundred hours: a single weapon only pays out once at 32, and there are 19 upgradeable gear entries.
Why the red tier matters for a grid
A 7×6 grid has 42 cells. An Oddity pattern can cover five of them with one effect, which changes how many other nodes fit. Players who chase red nodes are usually chasing cell efficiency rather than raw damage: Boundary Incursion alone is worth more placed nodes than any single damage node in the game.
Cleanse cost and Ouroboros
Cleansing an Oddity node in Ouroboros costs 280, which is the only way to remove one without overwriting it. Contraband nodes cleanse for free; Oddity does not. If you are running a cleansing loop, keep the red nodes out of it.
FAQ
Are red upgrades better than exotic?
They are different. Oddity nodes mostly change grid geometry, while Exotics change weapon behaviour. A build with three red nodes and no Exotic usually does less damage than the reverse.
How do you get red upgrades fast?
Level a single weapon to 32 for its Oddity reward, then run Amalgamation weekly. There is no vendor shortcut.
What is the best red upgrade?
The wiki does not rank nodes; the two grid-size nodes are the ones that appear in almost every endgame grid because they are the only way past the cell cap.
