Mycopunk Rotate Mods: How Mod Rotation Works

Rotation lets you spin an upgrade's hex pattern before you place it. It is bound to A and D while holding a node, it is gated by rarity, and the gate is the single most important progression milestone for how a build feels at each stage of a save.

Quick answer

How mod rotation works in Mycopunk: A and D controls, the level 3/8/16/30 rarity gates, what changes, and how rotation differs from pattern infusion.

The rotation milestones

Rarity Rotation unlocked at
Standard Player level 3
Rare Player level 8
Epic Player level 16
Exotic and above Player level 30

The colour of the A/D tooltip at the bottom of the upgrade inventory shows which tier you can currently rotate. If a node refuses to spin, the tooltip is telling you why.

What rotation actually changes

Each pattern has a fixed set of cells and a fixed centre. Rotating turns the shape in 60° steps around the hex grid, which changes which neighbouring cells it occupies but never the number of cells or the effect. A three-cell line becomes a diagonal, a five-cell wedge points the other way, and a ring stays a ring but its notch moves.

That is enough to change a build. On a 7×6 grid the difference between a wedge pointing into a corner and one pointing at open space is often two extra nodes.

Rotation and curation

Curated drops (weapon levels 3, 5 and 7) arrive with a fixed pattern. Random drops roll the pattern too, so the same node can arrive as a line in one run and a wedge in the next. Rotation is what makes those duplicates usable instead of dead weight.

Two nodes can have the same name, the same effect and different patterns; the collection screen treats them as the same node, and you cannot tell them apart until you hold one.

Rotation versus infusion

Both change geometry, and they solve different problems:

  • Rotation keeps the pattern, moves it
  • Infusion keeps the effect, takes a different pattern

Rotation is free and available from level 3. Infusion needs level 13, a donor node and resources, and it removes the donor. In practice players rotate early and infuse late, once they know which effect they want to keep.

Pattern inheritance

Ouroboros adds a third option. Interim Manager and Fake ID reroll every node you own while keeping the patterns, which means a grid you rotated carefully keeps its geometry while its effects change underneath you. That is the closest the game gets to a respec that does not cost you your layout.

Rotation and hollow nodes

A ring pattern stays hollow no matter how you rotate it. Rotating can move the hole to a cell that would have been unusable anyway — against a grid edge, for example — but it cannot close it. Removing a hole needs infusion.

Common rotation mistakes

  • Rotating a node before checking which cells remain at the edge of the grid
  • Using a wedge to fill an L-shaped gap instead of infusing a better shape
  • Forgetting that the tooltip colour, not the node colour, tells you the rotation gate
  • Rotating a curated node that arrived in a deliberately good shape

FAQ

What keys rotate mods in Mycopunk?

A and D, while holding the node in the inventory screen.

Why can't I rotate my Rare upgrade?

Rare rotation unlocks at player level 8. If you are below that, the node will not spin and the tooltip will show the locked colour.

Does rotation cost anything?

No. Rotating is free and unlimited before placement.

For the rest of the reference set, the enemy database lists every body and breakable part, and the resources guide explains where each map material drops.
